View our latest video - inside a school for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties
People often have misconceptions about what working life is like inside a school like St George's. They may think of the children as hospitalised patients requiring constant care and medication and that it would be completely different to a 'normal' school. They also may be nervous as to what they can expect when entering the school for the first time. Our job was to show the working life inside the school and address these misperceptions.
We spent three days at the school interviewing various members of staff, talking to the students and observing various activity taking place at the school throughout the day. There was a huge amount of activity taking place at any one time and we need to convey the level of support students were able to receive as well as the fact there is a lot of independence with students experiencing a range of activities.
Sue Holman, Head Teacher at the school comments, "I'm very proud of the students and this film has really captured the essence of the school. The DVD will feature in our promotion of the school for new staff posts, potential new students as well as within the local authority and for potential fund raising projects. It shows a good range of what we do at St George's School and our dedication to a creative curriculum."
We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work on this project as we witnessed some amazing work taking place in a fantastic school. The Making Sense and St George's Dragon project are initiatives that are worth taking a look at and you can view the website the students have put together to find out more http://www.stgeorgesdragon.com.
This is research in its broadest sense, but the type of work we love. Observing and talking to people about the impact of their work on others and being able to communicate this to a wider audience. It is a good example of what Working Films is all about and why we will be developing this further during 2009.
